HHS Alumni Weekend — “New Format” October 1 & 2, 2010 In the February 4 edition of the Houston Herald, the Houston Alumni Association announced several changes will occur when the organization stages its annual fall gathering. An expanded Saturday program will replace the banquet traditionally held that evening. Among the plans:
The group plans to amend its bylaws to not require its activities to be the first weekend in October. The vote is 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at its meeting at the First Baptist Church library. To shore up its finances, the organization's dues will increase to $10 per person. The cost of printing and mailing two newsletters is nearly $2,000 annually. This expense is paid through dues. To save about $500 in postage, no newsletter will be distributed until summer. If additional funds are received, the newsletter will continue its bi-annually circulation. The organization also is encouraging each class to have one or more representatives attend its monthly meetings. This would allow for more input and flow of information. "These changes have been approved by the local alumni group. We have appreciated the comments, attendance and enthusiasm at our meetings," said Bonnie McElroy, president. "I'm really excited about the new format for the alumni weekend. It will be a relaxing and informal time to visit together." 2010 Officers
YOU Are Needed!!! There is a need for more alumni members to become involved in the activites of the organization during the year — planning and preparing for alumni weekend, choosing scholarship winners, and preparing and mailing newsletters. Meetings are held the 4th Monday of each month, except May and December, at 7:00 p.m. in the library at First Baptist Church. We need YOU to be present!! Thank you to those who pay dues on a regular basis. These dues are used to pay for publishing and mailing newsletters. Since these costs are increasing, we need your dues in order to continue with this project. Scholarship Donations Your donations to the scholarship endowment fund allow the association to award scholarship to graduating seniors. The amount given each year is determined by the interest earned from the endowment. Thank you to the Class of 1953 and Dolores Dake for their contributions. We also received a contribution in memory of Carlos and Virginia Copeland. Alumni News Solicited Are you a graduate of Houston High School or have family members who are alumni?
